How we started the history of smart clocks

The clock is a simple and habitual object. From the early days, the clock makes us more organised by indicating what to do every moment of the day — not to be lazy and wake up for school, do homework in the evenings, don’t spend too much time on watching cartoons, try to be on time for our first date.

When we grow up, our life gets occupied by hobbies and businesses and we fall into the limitless information river. In such times, it’s very hard to find the simple indicators which point us into the right direction, the simplicity of clock from the childhood disappears, and in addition to time we need other metrics to know where to go.

When the LaMetric founders were working at digital agency Lemberg, they felt the impact of information overload very strongly. Every day they dealt with business calendars, marketing stats, social media, currency rates, project analytics and so on. It was quite hard to select the important things from all information to know what the next step was. They spent a lot of time getting key project indicators from analytics sites which were sometimes obsolete or not ready. The changes in every project effect the entire team, and they should be monitored in real-time to timely react on a failure or share success.

Then the good old clock came to their mind. They got the brilliant idea that a clock can show much more than the time, it is ideal object to gather all important metrics of your life and business in one place.

A bit earlier smartwatches appeared, with a similar vision to show important metrics to people on the go. But we need a similar device at home and in the office which points us in the right direction. LaMetric Time became the first smart clock when it began in 2013. It is the first of our products in the smart home category.

Our values

Style

We don’t believe in making smart things just because they are smart. Also, we don’t believe in a smart home with a lot of plasma screens around you to show what’s going on.

We think the home of the future should be as cozy as it used to be a hundred years ago with its beautiful, simple interiors, but, at the same time, habitual things should get intelligence without sacrificing their look and feel. We stick to the Enchanted Objects concept proposed by David Rose, which we tried to implement during the design of LaMetric Time.

Nike+ FuelBand is one of the stylish products that was a huge inspiration to LaMetric Time at the concept stage. We wanted to build a screen that looked like was part of the black casing when the device was switched off, and when switched on clearly projected the screen across a large physical space with sharp, bright square pixels. It was important to avoid the typical design of digital screens and to make a natural object that fits into your traditional home.

Most people doubted it was even possible, but this motivated us even more to bring it to life with the help of a Kickstarter campaign back in 2014. As a result, the unique industrial design of LaMetric Time enhances your interior and doesn’t leave anybody indifferent.

Productivity

Technology should be our tool for reaching better productivity and making us more efficient. We believe that the technology that brings us important information at a glance saves you time on getting key things and prepares you for better decisions.

Individuality

People are different, and it’s important to give people the possibility to reflect human individuality in the things they own. Each home, office or desk describes and emphasizes their owner's personality differently. We have tried to keep that in mind by giving people the choice to select from thousands of charming Faces and Apps which make the clock personalized to the customer.

Simplicity

Technology should work for people without being noticed. The interface to any technology should be as smooth as possible, and the overall user experience should leave a pleasant feeling. Ticker display, fast reaction, comfortable mobile apps, and three simple buttons make operations on our smart clock easy. Big buttons don’t allow mistakes and a highly visible display makes information accessible to everyone.

Creativity

“The Creative Adult Is The Child Who Survived” said Ursula K. Le Guin. We couldn't agree more. Everyone is creative, and the development of this skill is a must for the future. In LaMetric Time we tried to evolve creativity with an intuitive and easy way to create personal Faces and a simple development environment to build your own apps.

Thank you all for staying with us on the mission to build a nice looking and intelligent home!
